| Druid628 :: Tech Tips :: MSN :: Removing MSN Messenger (Method 2) |
| NOTE: This will cause problems
when visiting Hotmail. If using XP Professional use Method 1 first. Windows xp, the newest release from the wonderful people at Microsoft. They are so wonderful they have taken all the guess work out of downloading and installing MSN messenger, because they have encapsulated it into Windows xp. MSN messenger, those lovely people at Microsoft even were SOO nice enough to even have it launch every time you open any program Microsoft created (IE, Outlook Express etc.). Well I hate it. I want it to go away! If you want it to go away too here is how. |

|
| First, you need to show ALL files: | In a Windows Explorer window go to Tools then select Folder Options select the view tab. In the scrolling menu you should see a menu option named Hidden Files and Folders select Show Hidden Files and Folders then scroll down and look for and uncheck Hide protected operating system files | |
| Second, you must find the proper file. | Search for the file sysoc.inf.
The file should be located in C:\windows\inf\ right click on the file and select Edit. |
|
| Thirdly, you must search for the proper line. | Search the file for this line: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,HIDE,7
remove the HIDE, but LEAVE THE commas! The line now should look as so: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7 Save the file and close the window. |
|
| REBOOT | Now reboot your PC | |
| Next | Log into your computer and go to Control Panel on the Start Menu and select Add/Remove Programs. Select Windows Components and search for MSN Messenger and opt to remove it! | |
|
PLEASE NOTE! |
If you can not find it either in
Windows components nor the regular Add/Remove Programs yet you have a
unnamed box in your Windows components, you have installed one of the hot
fix, that interferes with this process. As to which hot fix I'm not
sure (still working on that one). I will have a new post up soon how to fix it I hope. |
|
| Finally | After you have removed MSN messenger I suggest your reverse what was done in step one to re-hide these system files. | |
