I'm the Asst. Network Admin. and Secutiy Specialist at my work. I also am a programmer, I often write scripts and such and leave them on my FreeBSD machine at home which I run SSH on. If I goto work or to a client's home or office and attempt to ssh into my machine to access the files I can't even see my computer period. Can't ping or anything it's as though my IP doesn't even existing. I tried getting help from Comcast and they freaked when I mentioned UNIX and then when I convinced them it had ABSOLUETLY nothing to do with UNIX they jerked me around and said it was something configured at my place of business... I built the firewall rules I think I would know... Anyway I was wondering if anyone else had had a problem like this. Thanks, -druid

Should be fine, are you running an external router or firewall? VPN?

I have a router now HOWEVER I had this problem before I ever installed the router. I've set up port forwarding so my ssh ports point to the appropriate PC's. As I said before I can't even ping my comcast IP from the outside world.

Not being able to ping is not unusual in some areas. Comcast likes to stop ping traffic in some areas. There are no official blocks up against SSH, has you tried other ports like HTTP or SMTP to your system? Nothing gets through? What about a firewall on the corporate side?

I have tried HTTP and SMTP just to see if they would work. I get nothing. At work my computer isn't behind a firewall. Plus it's not just at work. If I were to visit a friend's house it's the same thing no ping, http, smtp, ldap, ssh, telnet, basically any service you can think of, I can't access. It's really odd.
In regards to ping though, not trying to disprove you or anything so please don't take it that way but, when I was in chat with Comcast techs they said I should be able to ping my ip... I don't know it just makes me VERY ill, I'm even contemplating switching providers because of it.

Being able to ping varies from area to area. If you should be able to ping, and your system is working outbound, then I'd say you have a blocking firewall on that system.
I know I can ping my location here, but lots of Comcast customers can't, but their links still work. Some areas just block ICMP traffic.
You say you're running a router now, have you got the port forwarding setup properly?

Yes. I'm sure. As I said previously I had this problem even before I installed the router.

No, cause I can ssh into it from any other computer on my network here at home.

Maybe you should give a direct example of what happens from outside.

Care to tell us what the issue was? Someone else might come across the same problem...
